For a master’s thesis in the field of Building Information Modeling (BIM), our group is collaborating with the group led by Prof. Camillo Ciribini by providing the necessary support for the three-dimensional survey of the so-called Modulo building within the Department of Information Engineering.

The aim of this thesis is to create a very detailed model to be used as a digital twin for evaluating different types of sensors capable of analysing several physical values.

For this purpose, it is first necessary to produce an accurate survey of the existing building so, first of all, the thesis student created a digital model of the building exterior using the “Structure From Motion” photogrammetric technique implemented by the software Metashape. The set of images necessary for the creation of the three-dimensional model was acquired using a DJI Mini 2 drone through several flights at different altitudes. To frame the survey in the University’s topographical network, a number of targets, previously measured by a total station, were used as ground control points.

The next step is to carry out a detailed indoor survey to obtain a complete point cloud, which is necessary to easily develop the model. For this purpose, a mobile indoor mapping system will be used, supplementing the measurements with a static laser scanner where necessary.
